The Quran speaks about us having been created into nations and tribes so that we may come to know one another. This beautiful space allows a platform to share our way of life and culture with the wider community.

When we know ‘the other’ we realise that there are more things that unite us than divide us. We bleed the same-coloured blood and shed the same-coloured tears. The ink with which our pens flow is the same ink, and our stories and difficulties resonate with one another.

The centre will be the first of its kind in the South Lake District area and will help establish a strong connection with the breadth of the South Lakes community.

April 2020 we exchanged the contract for the land in Dalton In Furness. This piece of land is ideally suited to link the various towns and villages within the South Lake District area and will be accessible to all. It is indeed, only a 5 minute drive away from South Lakes Zoo, which is a well visited tourist site for many people who visit the region. The location will also allow travellers to the Lake District National Park to access our facility. The site is easily accessible via the A590 and is on a frequent bus route which connects the site to the Furness General Hospital.

These were the initial basic drawings, on the back of which we obtained our initial outline planning permission, for the conversation of purposes of land from commercial to community.

The community here at South Lakes is beginning to grow, and hence it is essential to have a vast vision for this area. Look at the recent relocation of uprooted Syrian families and the recent Afghani refugees who have been relocated to the region. Anyone who is aware of these respective cultures will have been gladened by the sheer hospitality they afford their visitors. Their hospitality in serving their smile, food, drink and their company is unmatched, so why should we not welcome them in the same way? We hope to give a sense of home to those who have been relocated, and welcome the local community to this space so they may get a real feel of a community that has a deep sense of purpose and meaning in life.

In shaa Allaah when we have the centre, we will be able to sustain it without any foreseeable constraints, with currently strategising on awqaaf that may help with ongoing costs.

We have Footprint design architect firm onboard currently who have revised drawings, based on everyones feedback, to include a more open entrance space, dedicated ghusl facility as well as a sister’s and children’s mezzanine prayer space and garden terrace – we have refined the drawings and submitted for full planning permission in December 2021, which has now been approved.

In shaa Allaah the current design incorporates:

  • A main prayer hall, Mezzanine prayer space for sisters
  • Multi-function community spaces,
  • Small kitchenette, Disabled access and toilets, Wudhu area
  • Ghusl area for the deceased
  • Roof courtyard
  • Car park

Our aim is to raise as much as possible through SLIC driven activities rather than depending on charitable donations alone. To begin with, the centre will depend on regular membership. The ‘centre activities’ will be volunteer run activities ranging from food sales, sports or anything which promotes social , cultural or communal wellbeing within the remits of Islamic principles. Sunnah sports may also be hosted, included archery and wrestling for those interested.
